Mr. James D. Smith

BEDFORD - Mr. James D. Smith, 71, of Bedford, died Friday in Rochester, Minnesota.

Born April 13, 1920, in Lawrence County, he was the son of John and Golda A. (Kern) Smith.

He was a grocer for over 25 years until 1963. He started Phil Mar Investments in Indianapolis in 1964, was president of the organization, and remained in the securities business until 1984 when he retired to his farm in Fayetteville. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the coast artillery for 24 months. He was a member of the Bedford Elks Lodge, American Legion, Indiana Sheriff's Association, Dunn Memorial Board of Governors, St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church, and was president of North Lawrence Detention Holding Corp.

Survivors include his wife, Mary A. (Dossen) Smith: one brother, John Edwin Smith of Bedford: three nephews and one niece.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Elsie Smith, and one brother, Joseph Smith.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church in Bedford with Father Daniel Armstrong and the Rev. Merla Craig officiating. Burial will be at Green Hill Cemetery where graveside military rites will be conducted by American Legion of Bedford.

Friends may call from 11:30 a.m.-8 p.m. today at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford where scripture service will be 7 p.m. tonight.

BEDFORD - Mrs. James D. (Mary A.) Smith, 85, The Bliss House, formerly of Hillside Drive, Bedford, died at 10 p.m. Wednesday at Dunn Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 24, 1920, in Oolitic, she was the daughter of Frank and Mattia (Schobon) Dossen. She married James D. Smith on Aug. 15, 1942, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 18, 1991.

Mary accompanied Jimmie to Port Townsend, Wash., while he was serving in the Army. Upon leaving the military, they worked together in the Smith's General Store in Fayetteville, where Mary was a meat cutter. They moved to Indianapolis in 1964 and worked together at Phil-Mar Investment Co., a company formed by the Smiths and friends. In 1984, Jimmie and Mary returned to their beloved Fayetteville and built their home to retire there. Too soon, Jimmie passed away and Mary moved to Bedford in 1992 on Hillside Drive, where she lived until November of 2005. Mary lived the last few months at the Bliss house where she enjoyed her apartment and being with friends and employees there.

She was a graduate of Bedford High School with the Class of 1937 and was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.

Survivors include four sisters, Rose Dossen, Chicago, Ill., Eva Chase and her husband Frank, Albuquerque, N.M., Margie Miller, Bradenton, Fla., and Ann Lancaster, Casopolis, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sisters, Katie Dossen and Lucy Dossen; and two brothers, Joseph Dossen and John Dossen.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford with Father Rick Eldred and the Rev. Ken Walden officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. A scripture service will be led at 7:30 p.m. by Sister Joan Luerman.
